Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating safe, decent, and affordable homeownership opportunities for families in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Through home construction, rehabilitation, preservation, and advocacy for fair housing policies, we help families achieve the stability of homeownership while strengthening local communities.

Position Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key partner to the CEO and Board of Directors, responsible for guiding the organization through significant growth while building robust financial infrastructure to expand impact and serve more families in Maryland. The ideal candidate will combine financial expertise with deep mission commitment and systems-building capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Financial Management
Partner with CEO and executive team to develop strategic plans, providing financial insights and analysis to inform decision-making
Develop financial models supporting strategic initiatives, growth opportunities, and scenario planning
Lead annual budgeting and forecasting process, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities
Provide strategic financial leadership to Board committees (Finance, Audit)
Oversee all financial operations including accounting, financial reporting, payroll, and cash flow management
Capital Strategy & Project Finance
Identify and secure diverse funding sources including grants, loans, and strategic partnerships
Oversee project-specific financial management including cost estimation, budgeting, and cost control for construction projects
Manage relationships with lenders, investors, and financial partners
Oversee real estate portfolio management, land acquisition financing, and mortgage lending operations
Organizational Development
Build and develop finance team capabilities and establish culture of continuous improvement
Establish financial policies, procedures, and systems to support organizational growth
Champion Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles through equitable resource allocation
Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate financial planning with program delivery
Technology & Systems Development
Assess current financial systems and develop strategic roadmap for technology enhancement and integration
Lead evaluation and implementation of appropriate financial management systems to support growth
Risk Management & Compliance
Establish comprehensive risk management frameworks addressing construction-specific, operational, and financial risks
Ensure compliance with GAAP, grant requirements, and federal/state funding regulations
Maintain robust internal controls and oversee annual audit processes
Manage organization's insurance and risk management programs
Ideal Candidate Profile & Required Qualifications
8-10+ years progressive financial management experience, with 3-5 years in senior leadership (CFO, VP Finance, Finance Director)
Proven nonprofit experience required, experience in growing organizations highly preferred
Prior Habit for Humanity experience a plus
Construction, real estate development, or housing finance experience strongly preferred
Strong FP&A skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning
Ability to operate strategically while remaining hands-on with financial operations
High degree of professionalism, executive presence, and ability to influence and collaborate across the organization
Experience leading finance teams through change, growth, and process improvements
Attributes include flexibility, persistence, drive, and a highly collaborative approach
CPA or MBA strongly preferred
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary: $175,000 - $200,000 (commensurate with experience)
